Shoreline Pet Lodge: A Legacy of Care, Handed Down with Heart
Barbara Butler has been a trusted name in Branford, Connecticut’s pet care community for nearly four decades. Since taking ownership of Shoreline Pet Lodge in 1987, she has poured her heart into building a business grounded in compassion, consistency, and truly personalized care.
Situated on 5.47 acres, the property featured a 6,208 SF facility offering overnight boarding, daycare, and bathing services. With room for more than 100 pets—including over 100 runs and enclosures—Shoreline was thoughtfully designed to deliver comfort and calm. Feline guests enjoyed peaceful stays in 12 private suites located near Barbara’s on-site home, reinforcing the “family first” approach that defined her philosophy.
“For me, it was never just about running a business—it was about creating a place where pets felt safe, loved, and truly at home. That philosophy shaped everything we did, year after year.”
Preparing a Business—and Its Owner—for What’s Next
Over the years, Barbara built a capable and reliable team that kept Shoreline running smoothly. Her daughter, Colleen, played a behind-the-scenes role—managing everything from schedules and supplies to marketing—before ultimately training the staff to run independently. By the time Barbara was ready to step away, Shoreline was operating like a well-oiled machine, perfectly positioned for new ownership.
When it came time to sell, Barbara wanted more than just a transaction. She wanted the next chapter of Shoreline’s story to honor its past—and protect its future. That’s when she partnered with PET|VET, a team known for fighting hard for their clients and always putting their best interests first.
“Teija and Katy were on top of things from start to finish. When things got tough, they were over the top!” Barbara said.
A Structured Sale with Strong Results
From the outset, PET|VET worked to ensure the deal was both smooth and successful. This was a private buyer deal, and finding the right fit was just the beginning. Along the way, the team tackled complex issues—including an underground storage tank issue that raised red flags with the buyer’s lender. Through clear communication, creative thinking, and persistence, PET|VET kept the deal moving forward without losing momentum or compromising terms.
They also negotiated deal points that benefited both buyer and seller, ensuring a balanced transaction that set everyone up for success. The real estate was also sold, allowing Barbara to fully exit the business while maximizing the value of her life’s work. Thanks to this careful planning and execution, Barbara ultimately received the highest possible valuation for Shoreline Pet Lodge.
PET|VET kept the deal moving in a structured fashion, but more importantly, they fought for Barbara every step of the way. Her legacy mattered—and PET|VET made sure it was honored.
Barbara recalls, “The PET|VET team was attentive, efficient, and knowledgeable. They had my back every step of the way! I cannot believe how hard this team worked. They earned their commission!!” Her advice to anyone thinking about selling: “Why struggle and attempt to do this on your own or with local people who do not know the pet business. Teija and team guide you through the process with a closing at the end.”
A Future Secured, A Legacy Preserved
With the deal now complete, Shoreline Pet Lodge is in the hands of new owners who share Barbara’s values and vision. The team remains in place, the systems are strong, and the reputation continues to shine—just as it has for decades.
For Barbara, retirement brings the chance to enjoy well-earned rest, knowing that her beloved business is secure and set up for continued success.
“I’m proud of what we built here,” she said. “And I’m grateful to PET|VET for helping me close this chapter on a high note. They never stopped looking out for me.”
