Boxers Bed & Biscuits

Angela Beck

Boxers Bed & Biscuits’ Sale Garners Top Dollar Thanks to PET|VET

After her husband declared they could no longer go on vacation with their three beloved boxers, Angela Beck, decided to start Boxers Bed & Biscuits Pet Resort in Belpre, OH. It was 2010 and, at that time, pet hotels were emerging as a more comfortable alternative to traditional dog kennels.

“No one believed that in this small town of Belpre something like this would take off,” said Angela. “They thought opening a pet hotel was a crazy idea — but I did it and it worked out.”

Angela struggled to get financing and buy-in initially, but the business took off once she did. Boxers Bed & Biscuits opened in a small converted home with 20 suites and quickly outgrew the space. The business moved into a converted church in 2014 and once again, the pet hotel was booked solid with a loyal clientele.

With the continued success of Boxers Bed & Biscuits, Angela knew there were even more opportunities to grow. In 2018, she embarked on a new business venture and purchased and renovated a 48,240-square-foot structure in the heart of Belpre. The facility became a comprehensive pet care facility with boarding, daycare, grooming, a veterinary clinic, and training services.

“We were able to build the suites and do everything we wanted to do,” Angela said. “Then, of course, there was a huge learning curve where I realized every dog does not behave like my dogs.”

From rubber flooring issues to destructible dog beds to the pandemic, Angela’s business overcame unimaginable hurdles to get to where it was. She credits her amazing team for all the achievements over the years including being recognized with the Small Business Administration “Spark Award” in Ohio.

Starting the Conversation with a Pet Care Facility Broker

After years of putting her heart and soul into the business, it was time for Angela to sell. Her priorities were changing and her family needed her more than ever before. “It was a gut-wrenching decision to sell — to some degree your business becomes your child,” Angela said. “To trust and hand it off to someone else is extremely difficult, to put it mildly.”

She admits she was emotionally attached to the business and wanted to ensure whoever bought it would operate with the same values and principles she did. Selling a business was uncharted territory for Angela and she wanted peace of mind throughout the process.

“Teija talked me off the ledge and reassured me PET|VET only dealt with companies interested in doing the very best for the business. This was the encouragement I needed,” Angela said.

From there, Angela recalls the sales process went smoothly and the PET|VET team took care of every element of the transaction with professionalism and integrity.

PET|VET Team Support

“Everyone we dealt with on Teija’s side was highly skilled and their attention to detail was amazing,” said Angela. “I could never have done this on my own — the value the team provided was immense.”

To Angela’s surprise, the PET|VET team’s guidance did not stop once the ink was dry. They continued to consult until the business was completely transitioned to the new owners. This was particularly helpful in the Boxers Bed & Biscuits deal because the sale involved both the real estate and the business.

Brokering a Successful Deal in the Pet Care Industry

While Angela misses the animals and her staff, she’s living life to its fullest in Florida. Since selling her business, she’s been spending quality time with her family and — for the first time in more than a decade — celebrating holidays without worrying about her business.

“I’m not stressing about anything — it’s really amazing and I’m enjoying it,” she said.

For now, Angela has no plans to start a new business and is enjoying family and the Florida sunshine.
